Mass Emergency Notification Systems

Telecommunications technologies that allow emergency management organizations to rapidly send telephone notifications to all residents and businesses in an affected area in the event of a major disaster or other emergency. An operator using the system can identify the affected neighborhood or region and record a message that describes the situation. The system automatically calls listed and unlisted telephone numbers (including TTY/TDD) within the affected area and delivers the recorded message. If phone lines are busy, the system attempts to redial those telephone numbers to make contact. If an answering machine picks up the call, the emergency message will be left on the machine. Also included are text message alert systems and systems that use other technologies to send real-time messages.

Personal Protective Gear for First Responders

Equipment and clothing that is certified to shield or isolate first responders against chemical, thermal, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive threats. Included are personal protective equipment for fire and emergency service personnel operating at technical rescue incidents involving building or structural collapse, vehicle accidents, confined spaces, trench cave-ins, scaffolding collapses and high angle climbing accidents; vapor-protective ensembles that are certified as being compliant with requirements for protection against chemical and biological warfare agents such as vapors, gases, liquids and particulates; ensembles that provide limited protection against chemical flash fires (for escape purposes only); ensembles that provide protection for responders operating in domestic terrorism incidents involving dual-use industrial chemicals, chemical terrorism agents or biological terrorism agents; single and multiple-use medical protective clothing including garments, gloves, footwear and face protection devices used while providing patient care during emergency medical operations to protect against exposure to blood and body-fluid borne pathogens; self-contained breathing apparatus for use in chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear exposures; and air purifying respirators (gas masks) for use during entry into atmospheres that pose chemical, biological or nuclear threats.
