CHAMPVA

The Civilian Health and Medical Program of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is a medical benefits program through which the VA helps pay for medical services and supplies obtained from civilian sources by eligible dependents and survivors of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled as a result of a service-connected disability, who died as a result of a service-connected disability, who, at the time of death were totally disabled as a result of a service-connected disability, or who died while on active duty.

TRICARE Extra

TRICARE Extra provides health care benefits for active duty members of the services including the Coast Guard, NOAA and the Public Health Service; qualified family members; retirees and their family members; and the spouses and children of deceased active duty and retired personnel. The program is one of three TRICARE options and, like TRICARE Standard, helps to pays the costs of inpatient, outpatient and emergency medical services obtained from civilian sources. It allows beneficiaries to select the health care provider of their choice but provides a 5% out-of-pocket discount when the beneficiary uses a preferred provider network provider. Otherwise, the same deductibles and co-payments apply. TRICARE is a regional managed care program administered by the Department of Defense (DoD) Health Affairs Office in collaboration with civilian contractors.

TRICARE Prime

TRICARE Prime provides health care benefits for active duty members of the uniformed services including the Coast Guard, NOAA and the Public Health Service; qualified family members; retirees and their family members; and the spouses and children of deceased active duty and retired personnel. The program is an option similar to civilian health maintenance organizations (HMOs) which requires that beneficiaries enroll with a program that serves as a central source for all health care needs. Beneficiaries are assigned a primary care manager and receive assistance in making specialty appointments and claims filing. Enrollees receive their care within the integrated military and civilian network of TRICARE providers, pay an enrollment fee (waived for active duty members and their families), and pay significantly less for inpatient care and smaller co-payments for outpatient services received from civilian providers. There are no deductibles. Family members and retirees must choose to enroll in TRICARE prime. TRICARE Standard

TRICARE Standard, formerly known as CHAMPUS, provides heath care benefits for active duty members of the uniformed services including the Coast Guard, NOAA and the Public Health Service; qualified family members; retirees and their family members; and the spouses and children of deceased active duty and retired personnel. The program is one of three TRICARE options and helps to pay the costs of inpatient, outpatient and emergency medical services obtained from civilian sources. Beneficiaries pay an annual deductible and a share of the costs and may select the authorized civilian health care provider of their choice. There is no enrollment required for families. TRICARE is a regional managed care program administered by the Department of Defense (DoD) Health Affairs Office in collaboration with civilian contractors.
